did a professional spray painting course once and whenever you spray alloy or aluminium to get an etch for the paint to stick needs a light zinc chromate spray with emphasis on light.they look nice grey.

Definately a first ..... I will of course give them the royal treatment anyway but I suspect someone has had them apart 'recently' as all the screws were pretty easy to undo ....helped along with the trusty JIS drivers !

Wow mate thats looking fantastic so far thanks for all the pics!
I just joined up, i'm rebuilding a GSX250 and i've just started. The bike runs well enough but i'm having trouble getting the engine covers off because of the soft screw heads are a little threaded. Good to see what to expect inside any details on what you cleaned and how would be appreciated!

Cheers mate .... its a bit on pause at the moment as Im trying to get the FZR going and get a shed built to put it all in!

Feel free to start up a build thread as we are always interested in the progress and pictures of course and to get any questions answered :thumb_ups:

With the screw heads , the best thing for that is to get yourself a set of these ....... it will stop any further head damage to untouched ones and will help with the already buggered ones.

And for allen head bolts a set of socket hex keys are the go.

:welcome: to the forum Ben. Plenty of help and assistance here. As for your engine covers, would use an impact driver if the screws are really bad. Kits with allen heads are available to replace them, much simpler for the future.
There is a product called threebond engine conditioner that will do an outstanding job, not the cheapest but worth it.
Or you can use throttle body cleaner, ultrasonic cleaners are great as well.
Whereabouts are you located mate, we like seeing photo's so feel free to post, Keep us posted.:thumb_ups:

    Thanks Phil and Grey,

JIS heads look good! More contact the better. I'm hoping that they come out as i'm pretty sure they aren't standard fit on those engines? (i've seen some other builds that had bolts as originals)

I have a good Ryobi impact driver that I can use, can I get a JIS thread for it?
