Don't forget to remove the compliance plate before powder coating it

Powdercoat is good, but it has some drawbacks. I spray my frames with black enamel (dulux or white knight brands)from that big hardware store with a low pressure gun at 30psi. Must be very clean and use etch primer with a few days to dry the enamel before touching. Good luck with your project.

It would be nice to save money on the frame and spend it on the tank and the seat. I went to the wreckers today and he had a thrashed out cbx250 so I took the seat and tank off and started chuckin tanks on. This one was fav but it would be nice to a hear a few opinions. It's off of a Suzuki Gt550 '73 model I think he said. Is it wrong to use bits off of another brand of bike? I think that maybe it might be a little too high. Let me know what you think anyways.

Thats pretty much the type of tank I want for the pub racer :D .... looks good to me.

mate u may lose friends if u put a Harley sticker on your bike but anything else goes as long as it looks good and u can make it "work"

Just remember to look for heavy rust inside, splits in the seams , 'patches' and obviously dents ..... these things should relate to what its worth.

    Did he give u a price ?

This tank was new old stock, some surface damage on the outide, bare metal on inside can still be seen except for some surface rust from where the cap has been left open, but don't get me started. Quoted me $150, There were other ones there with surface damage that would be cheaper and seeing as though I will be strippin it, it might be worth getting the cheaper one.
    work required: price

I meant to ask aswell, where the rear shock mounts to the frame there is a bend in the frame that goes upwards so the seat part of the frame isn't level with the tank. Do you think this will be a problem when tryin to fit a seat?

I wouldnt pay that much .......

    http://auction.netbikes.com.au/search.php?PHPSESSID=mqlvrf3vdpq994d55ok9l76afxbug586&q=tanks

I was just studying the pics in that guys thread I linked before to see the rear of the frame....... that photo I posted he has photoshopped the seat in! ... if only it was that easy :headbang:

That bend is something that u cant change as it would affect the integrity of the frame ..... but Im sure theres been plenty of other rears that have had problems but theres a way around it ....... maybe the rear cowl can go 'over' it?
might have to do a mock up of a seat to see what works ...... Ive seen that in many cafe type build threads!

Im lucky the GSX rear is dead straight.

I think u might need that temporary commuter bike :lolsign:

Well the frame is due to go in for powder coating tomorrow, so I guess I'll be startin to tear her down tonight. End up getting sandblasting, zinc coating and powder coat for $150 cash. Bout as good as it's gunna get around my area I reckon. And seeing how good the results are I'm gunna go for it. I'm also gunna have a crack at making the seat this w/e.

Murdo - you made my decision for powdercoating alot harder, but just to be sure. Would it cost more than $150 to get it sprayed with 2pak?

would still need blasting and spray painters are not cheap. either paint yourself or put in to the powder coaters. i would spend the 150 and save on blood sweat and tears.

with the seat do a mock up with cardboard to make stencils, use ply as a base then high density foam to form and sand. fibreglass with mat first ,then choped strand the satin[fibreglass polyester cloth ] then foam for comfort on backside and marine vynil.

Risky could I get you to explain this in a little more detail, like a step by step process. All I did was watch this video and florist foam is cheap and readily accessible for me

For that price I would go with the powdercoating. Have you some taps to clean the threads before reassembly?

ok,2 types of resin ...polyester and vynil ester. use the cheapest which is about 60 bucks for 4 litres. catalyst ue no more than 3% as you can have the resin burn as the catalitic reaction takes place. [20 mill plus tangara train mould and parts went up in smoke here because a clown used 2 much hardener.]fibreglss mat, chopped strand and polyester cloth to suit and build to eigth inch thickness.mock up base size in cardboard and tansfer to ply template. high density foam comes in various thickness and can be sandes with body filler long sander.sand shape to fit your derriere. once desired shape is reached glass over.cloth first then chopped strand then silk. silk gives a smoother finish.then allow 45 minutes for each layer to dry.base, 3 middle, cloth. do not get catalyst in eyes or you will be blind so no scratching itchy nose. fumes will make your eyes water and prolonged exposure to resin makes you sterile.;[no sperm count====no babies]once done you can glue foam for comfort to seat and stretch marine vynil over nd staple underneath to ply. if you want the seat hollow cut off base and use acetone to melt foam but cut out as much s you can first or glass will also melt.if you want to re use mould have it 2 pak sprayed nd give at least 10 coats of carnauba wax allowing 10 mins between coats to flash off.packaging plastic tape also can be waxed and cheaper than 2 pak.i did a mould for a letterbox once and it took an effing long time. not a one nite job and material cost to finish could be over 200 plus the hours you put in. hope this helps. i have glassed outdoor furniture nd boats, have a 3 metre speedboat with 25hp donk but never use it now.spent a grand on materials 18 years ago and have the mould under house.

    6x1.0mm, 8x1.25mm, 10x1.25 and 10x1.5mm are the most common sizes/pitch used.

Get a set of these ... hex key sockets.... especially good for tight ones...... and essential if you need to use a torque wrench.
Cant remember if they were Supercheap or Bunnings ..... but they were pretty cheap

Good progress there .... that frame will look 1000% when recoated.

Awesome, I'll be going after work to get a set. Unfortunately even though the frame will be stripped by this afternoon, I don't think it will be ready for powder coating anytime soon. I need to work out which tabs I'm keeping and which one I won't be, I'd hate to get it PC'd and then start grinding bits off lol.
