Some shocks are pressurised and some others have a pressurised bladder. It is a bit of a specialist operation and you will need special tools, or at least to make them. I would be wary of just trying to pull it to pieces without more information. Is the shock leaking? Is the chrome on the shaft in good condition?
The chrome is in good nick and I think there is a small leak, I just wanted to replace the fluid etc. and maybe look at painting them
What maelstrom said The rubber bushes look shot. Clean them up and see if u can see them leaking still. What markings are on them? name? numbers?
... or u could just buy new ones http://www.japbikespares.com/honda-cbx250-325mm-rear-chrome-shock-absorbers
I can't tell exactly from the pic but it looks like you need to make a pin spanner to undo the main shock body nut. Something like this.
Definitely, I was looking in there and there are locating point at the bottom so I guessed it was some specialised tool, hopefully I can pick one up from the local Honda dealer.
Those look great G.I. I really like the old look of the stock ones though. There are no markings on them anywhere except for a JAPAN stamp lol. This f'in bike shits me sometimes, I'll be buying a manual before I buy the next bike! I'm tryin to find an exploded view on www.cmsnl.com
not certain but my guess is oil reservoir under nitrogen gas pressure.would not pull apart as could not be fixed except by specialist.maskand paint..body was anodised before assembly.
Don't get frustrated, it is part of the fun of working on machinery. The tool for the shock I would make myself with a hacksaw, file and welder. I doubt you would get one from a Honda dealer. Shocks are a bit of a proprietary item on most Japanese bikes and servicing them is not common. I used to service the shocks on Ducatis as part of routine service, but it was easy to get parts for them.
What Risky said is usually the case, but often they have a warning sticker on them, or there might be a warning in the manual. With a little cheap 250 it may not have pressurised shocks, but be careful if you try to pull it apart, go slowly.
Grey is correct as are risky and maelstrom, I wouldn't waste another cent on those shocks. Trust me, you will end up spending a lot for little results, the new ones are just that "NEW". I got a set for my X7 and have never looked back.
wipe with thinners then paint if you are short of cash.if rear end not bouncy they are still working.
But then knowing you can buy a new set if it all goes pear shaped, I would want to have a crack at them just for the hell of it.
if gas filled as i suspect then you have only one set of eyes and they cannot be replaced,BE CAREFUL.
Thanks for all the quick replies guys, I think what I will do is leave them intact and buy a new set. Maybe if I take all the parts I don't need for the cafe racer and trade him my good bits for bits I need. Unfortunately I'm well aware of how notorious these kinds of people are for ripping people off. Have any of you tried to do this at a wreckers or would I be better of selling the parts on Gumtree or something? Also the swingarm is getting sandblasted today Also is the length of the shock = length between centre of top and bottom mount at full extension?
Paint your old shocks and put them on ebay. New ones will have new seals and bushes, so be gauranteed not to leak. Be very wary on gas filled shocks, some of them have up to 300psi when new. If you do want to rebuild them, parts availability may be the big problem. Go new. Re length, yes at full extension.
Arnt bikes fun? The other thing to check is the size of the bush ..... in other words the diameter of the fixing point on the frame. Get a set of cheap vernier calipers .... very handy http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-150m...036908080?pt=AU_HandTools&hash=item4abf4a7630 Heres the ones I bought ..... check if they are having any specials....... and he will send u a set of bushes if u need anything other than the 10mm they come with. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-DUCATI-Yamaha-MOTO-GUZZI-Kawasaki-SUZUKI-325mm-shocks-clearance-/321219181563?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&nma=true&si=pgK4cz%2FIRFRCAG4wJY5u97qYyWI%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc Bush measurement .....
These guys have been doing shocks for a long time. http://www.radmotorcycleshockyrepairs.com.au/ Might be worth asking them about your shocks. I like the look of your original ones and it doesn't hurt to ask. I have to say you get a lot of good feedback on this forum. cheers Blair
