your dead on the money about the engineers gray they do it all for a reason , tried and tested many many times , i have tested alot of things on my fzr to get to the conclusion i got to ( floats being out) bypassing the fuel pump was one of them i thought it helped but no the bike soon flooded shortly after ,
a sure fire way to know at the cost of some cca power from your battery is when it wont rev , hold the starter on no throttle untill it runs (assuming your idle is set right) should burn of the excess and rev up every time

You know Ive been thinking about the float heights thing.
To be honest I cant remember what I did when I rebuilt the carbs..... its possible Ive forgotten to set the heights during the mad scramble to get them going or set them wrong.

Now the bike has sat for a couple of days and last attempts to start it was a very rough 'idle only' thing happening.

So I just went out to test your theory ..... no choke , no throttle ...... started first go and revved like a bought one.

    I need a holiday :headbang:

So 4 hours later I come out to try it ..... 'idle only' again ..... so off with the helmet and seat and grab the multimeter.

Start it with the multimeter on it and it starts normally and revs ...... :commando:

Back on with the seat and helmet and a spin up the street ...... and do I make it back? ..... wait for the gripping end of this blockbuster.....

Well we may have made a promising breakthru ..... fuel levels in the bowls are way way too high.
Couldnt check #2 as it has no drain plug (why, I have no idea)
I didnt get any further as I guess it will be off with the carbs and backtrack a little ..... and a mate turned up so we sat and looked at the bike and drank beer for 4 hours..... as you do.

Define too high - the height is meant to be 10.5mm above the line on the carb bowls

    peace out

    Hi Mr Grey,
That supplement that I posted up for the 3LN1 shows what appears to be 9.2mm. I have no idea where that is measured from. By all means they should be set correctly; however I seriously doubt that running too rich would cause your problems. I still believe we have to go with the logical choice that links up with Ruckus' findings. electrical and related to the control unit/ fuel pump.
    cheers
    Blair

Well Ive never read a straight answer yet to the best fuel height / float height measurement thing .... or the best way to do it thing.

I remember someone saying that they had the level to the line and it was running perfect.

But anyway , I havnt done it with accurate measurements yet but 2 of them were probably 20mm above the line ...if thats possible!

I pulled a plug the other day and it was 'black'.

EDIT: yea I still intend to delve into the other 'options' :thumb_ups:

grey having the same problem myself and having measured my floats knowing there out
if burning off the excess fuel the way i do allows you to rev it up every time (more so after it wont rev up)
then its all most certain the floats are allowing to much fuel in causing it to flood , having said that if you think the float measurement you took is overly excessive then you may have a broken or worn rubber needle thing that the float pushes up to stop the fuel coming in .
id say doing the floats then a balance will be all you need
you have the viton seel kit right

this is the best how to floats i have read
until just now i have never seen anyone say on the line is right but it would make sense wouldn't it i mean that's what a line on something is generally for , fill to the line ect

I made a jig to measure mine - I'll take photos of it, it's an easy process, but the carbs will have to removed - yet again...

I was fortunate that mine were all on spec, but I had to measure them before refitting to know that for certain

    peace out

    Thta
That's the jig I made and it worked really well, though I didn't have the right angle bend in the tube I still got meaningful measurements

Mine all came in at 10.5mm above the line
