So the old bitch stayed true to form and wouldnt run .... it did fire many times though after a six pack of starting fluid
Aerostart worked so much better than Start Ya Bastard :idk:
Might resort to 91 straight down the carb throats

The fuel pump was leaking so Im hoping its just died and not feeding the carbs .... its the original and I had replaced it with a cheap china but from memory it failed .... time to search the 101 boxes of FZR parts :headbang:

Worth doing the quick and easy thing of checking the fuel levels in the carbs?

Emptied the bowls as its been sitting for awhile .... fuel was ordinary
Fresh fuel and it started (with help) and ran .... wouldnt go above 7/8000 RPM and was smoking from the headers and also out the EXUP cover ... Im guessing I didnt install the valve correctly and thought I should be checking the orientation at the time ... Id say its locked shut :commando:

The smoke alarm went off in the lounge room and the neigbours Im sure enjoyed the screaming open exhaust on a peaceful Sunday arvo ..... :aggressive:

I won't ask why the bike was in the loungeroom, as it's to each their own

Been a while since I fettled with an EXUP, I suppose it could be 180 degrees out of rotation [possible?] - the key on startup will let you see if it's rotating or not

Workshop is in the back "sunroom" .... I can be a lounge lizard and contemplate my latest design and engineering breakthrough .... or just throw empty stubbies at bikes that wont go, without getting up

I think I have the EXUP correct .... been awhile for me too .... theres really only 1 way it will sit.
Its actually nearly fully closed at startup .... these are different headers that had a visit to the metal drop saw and obviously painted .... so thats probably more the cause of the smoking

Sensitive to engine speed, the EXUP valve is almost entirely closed at low rpm and gradually opens to permit unrestricted gas flow at high rpm. Improvements include smoother and quieter idle, more power at all rpms, significant low-range and mid-range torque increases, and higher gas mileage. By gradually opening the valve as revs increase, the positive wave in the mid-range is eliminated, yet the exhaust system can "breathe" fully at high revs for maximum power.

Its the first attempt at running with the COPS installed so Im hoping theres not a glitch there .... it seemed to run smooth enough but just RPM limited
Need to remove a little engine oil too as I overfilled it slightly

    Ill try again tomorrow

"wouldnt go above 7/8000 RPM and was smoking from the headers and also out the EXUP cover"

Is that the first time you've run that engine with the painted headers? I don't know Mikuni carbs too much, but is it possible the idle jets are gunked up from sitting around?

Sorry Chief. I must have been typing while you posted your "these are different headers that had a visit to the metal drop saw and obviously painted .... so that's probably more the cause of the smoking" post. Hopefully, you'll get her running sweet and give the rest of us something to chase at Gunnedah!

It also sounds choked, so I think he's possibly correct about something amiss with the EXUP - been a long time since I disassembled mine and I cannot remember if it can be rotated 360 degrees which means it could potentially be 180 degrees out of phase

So redid the EXUP .... theres really only 1 way it will go

Changed the fuel pump as the original sounded dead

The vid shows it running , holding it on full throttle

    Strange behaviour
    So ... fuel or electrics
Yes the carbs have sat for some time but the new harness and COPS are untested till now.

Temps on all 4 headers were somewhat the same
And **** it was loud ... I had to get the earmuffs :D

My vote... carbs... I reckon your main jets are blocked from sitting so long. If the mains are blocked then the pilots will be too. The emulsion needles may also be stuck. See if you can lift the slides manually. You know the drill!

Ive only opened #1 so far and a bit gummy in the bowl
    Main jet clear
    Starter and pilot jet blocked

    Ho hum
Looks like Ill have to forego church tomorrow and operate on Mikunis all day :aggressive::D

Other than that I loaded up a 15T sprocket (17T stock) and lubed and tightened the chain for those wheel standing takeoffs

Also in your first picture, that brass tube looks like its' about to break off, if not broken already

    #2 carby

All jets blocked and the jet holder bolt/screw broken

Mr Green/Blue .... your o rings are holding up well .... its nearly 10 years since I initially did these carbs
I also actually found those sleeved jet holders ..... so in they go finally
The merge chamber o ring on #2 has a nick out of it .... are any others in the kits the same? ... I have plenty of your o rings on hand , but from pre merge chamber discovery

Tip for young players .... dont have the pilot merge chamber bung sitting on the table after u have put a carb all back together :commando:
