Good news everyone. A friend of mine who owns a a Yamaha that uses CR9's and he has an entire box of them. I threw in some new spark plugs and everything was going great, until the bike got warm. The stutter is still there.
I'll test them tomorrow when there's light. I think I have the instructions and ohms readings that i need for them
yea pretty sure its in the manual ..... it could be a coil failing under heat. Im sure its been mentioned but make sure 1 coil goes to 1 and 4 and the other coil fires 2 and 3 cylinder.
Ok, I've popped off the coils and here's the readings. Coils 1&4 Primary windings: 4.1-3.9 ohms (the manual says 2.3-3.5 ohms) secondary windings are at 15.07 kohms Coil 2&3 Primary Windings: 3.9-3.7 ohms Secondary Windings: Failed to give a reading, the plug end was a bit worn so i cut it off and got some fresh wire exposed. 14.42 kohms
-EDIT- I noticed that one of the leads on coil 2&3 was pretty bad and would only make a connection when angled a specific way, I clipped the bad bit off and put everything back together and now it's making a constant reading.
A mate decided to come over and give me a hand. We hooked up the coils. Cleaned the plugs again. Made sure all the resistances were the same after we hooked it all up. Then the bike failed to start. Coughing every now and then. But I don't know which coil did which 2 cylinders and which way the black and green and black and red wires go to each coil. Tomorrow when there's light I'll check them all again. Also what does that pipe on top of the air box do?
When testing coils I heat them with a hair dryer until too hot to hold in hand and test them again to see if readings are still within limits.
On the Amodel it is just a fuel overflow outlet. On the c model it serves some purpose I do not know but. Consult the manual.
If the coil leads havnt been hacked then 1 will have a short and long lead to reach 1 and 4 and the other will have 2 equal length .....coils are the same anyway Heres the wiring schematic from the manual ..... but the color codes dont match yours .....??
Those colour codes are the same. I'll have a look at it tomorrow when there's a bit more light. Right now she doesn't start at all, remember when I had to replace the coils because the spark was too weak to start? I think I'm having the same issue again. my mate who was around earlier has a 1996 ZX6R with the same coils as mine, we're going to do a little swap and see if anything works.
Does anyone know the part number for the coil packs? The best I can find is KP02, but they're listed for a ZX6R onwards. Are there any aftermarket coils that I can use?
Ok. Today I got 16 spark plugs, 8 of them are CR9E's and 8 are CR8E's, 2 meters of spark lead and I got the bike started again. I also found a vacuum leak with a can of aerostart and patched that up to. She ran fine for about 10 minutes and then the stutter happened. I kept riding, gave her some throttle and kept going. On the way back home, she stalled at a set of lights and refused to start again (thankfully I was about 2 blocks from home.) I pulled apart the bike again, and ripped out one of the spark plugs. These were brand new plugs half an hour ago. She's still running rich. I've already adjusted the floats to 13mm and bench balanced the carbs. What should I do?
have you tried them at 2.5 turns out ? , all it takes is less then 1/8th of a turn for them to out... so going back to factory would be a good start
Is everything else stock and stock settings? ...as in the pilot jets, main jets , needle clip position?..... air filter?
