Bit of an update. She's on the road, got a roadworthy and rego, and I know that the ZX2R's have always had the cam chain rattle, and I don't know if it's because I haven't ridden the bike in over a year of if it just really really bad, but the rattly/grindy noise is now prevalent all through the rev range regardless of speed and it almost drowns out the exhaust. is it possible to shim the tensioner to put more pressure on the cam chain? or to stretch out the spring or something? I also had the carbs tuned professionally, the bike starts and idles fine (after some warm up time) the low end, and mid range is punchy but as soon as the bike goes over about 15-16k RPM everything just bogs down and almost sounds like I'm limiter bashing, acceleration basically just stops. could this be a fueling issue, something to do with the float heights or could it be something else?
Don't ignore it, last time this happened on here, the engine dropped a valve. I'd stop riding and replace all the valve springs This means the head has to come off
Found it. I smashed up my Tachometer a couple weeks back when the bike fell over. Replaced the tachometer and the problem is solved.
Does anyone know if a ZX6R manual cam chain tensioner will fit a ZXR 250? I know a zzr250 tensioner will work, but I can't find either a ZXR 250 or a zzr 250 cam chain tensioner. I somehow stripped the thread of one of the exhaust studs, how would I go about fixing that?
did you wreck the hole in the head where the stud screws in or the thread on the stud? if on the stud then new stud. to take out you need to undo the stud with vice grips or similar.
No, I stripped the thread on the inside of the head. I ended up helicoiling it. I also replaced the cam chain tensioner and there is still a very bad rattle, it seems to get worse the higher RPM it goes especially at 5,500rpm-6,500rpm and then again at 10,500rpm-12,000rpm after that the exhaust gets too loud to hear it. I'm beginning to think that it might be the valve clearances, so I might try and find a shim kit or something.
Fizzer factory has a shim kit. Take your measurements and we'll see if we can swap shims you have but can't use, for the ones you need
I found a shim kit for a KX250, they have the same 7.48mm OD shims. But I think I might stop off at the bike shop that did my valve clearance last time and see if they have any 7.48mm shims left over.
Found the grinding/tapping noise. Also turns out the cam chain was only 28 links from the markings on the cams when it should have been 29. Got the new chain in, then got the distances set properly and the bike runs flawlessly now... when it starts. Now I just need to figure out why the bike wont start.
