I'm hopefully getting a FZR really soon, and I was wondering, how fast can they go?
Obviously the 250s don't have a huge engine but how well do they do?
Please state weather your talking about mph or kph, because I'm from New Zealand and we do kph over here, also can you please tell me the year (of the bike).

Cheers

Funny you should ask, i was just checking this out for myself last weekend. I got it up to 160kph with the throttle pinned in 6th, it didn't seem to want to go much faster, but then there were still revs left to go i suppose 170-180 would be possible, especially with a tail wind.
Not the sort of thing you can do often anyway here anyway without a run -in with the 's.
Best to try it on a track.

Oh, its an '88 2kr in pretty good nick.

Mine doesn't have a speedo, but it'll do 18,000 RPM in sixth down the main straight...

Ok at Eastern Creek I got it up to about 180km/h on the straight. But who knows how accurate the speedo is anyway??

Wow, I'm impressed. Not too sure about some of the fishermans tales though, unless your bike has been turbocharged (can you do that??) Now that would be intersting...

Indicated approximately 10km/h above the last mark of 180 on the speedo. I was clocked by an 'Busa & a ZX9R at approximately 190.

This was on a very fast paced group ride; although that said... through the twisties i was giving them bigguns a helluva ride. Nothing quite like being able to throw a 2fiddy through corners faster than the litre blasters.

In terms of road & conditions... rapidly cooling air (dropped from ~22º to 14º as we went through the hills), no wind, very VERY long straight stretch of road coming down from Noojee into Traralgon (? i think). To get it up to those speeds you need to do most of the work in 5th gear until you can get into the sweet spot of 6th (~14k rpm); and need to be kissing the tank like you wouldnt believe. Tuck in those elbow, pull in those legs, and keep that throttle pinned.

Most weekends i'll hit ~170km/h... in the city i won't see more than ~150. ;) :p

I may have failed to mention that mine is a 1000.

We all know your's is the big grand pappy of our lil Fizzers Tim!
I'm still wondering if i want another FZR, or if i wanna go for something newer. At the moment, its looking like a Triumph 955i ;)

Nice choice Koma. Very nice. I too, have been contemplating the Triumph line.

When you get to about 130km/h... if you change from 4th to 5th and then stay in 5th right the way up to about 165-170 (near redline), then change to 6th... you'll get to its max speed alot quicker than just letting 6th gear wind up.

It was one of my first ever group rides when i had a nut-case on a road-legal-trackbike CBR2fiddy ask me why i was upshifting so early. I said i was taking it to 12k rpm and that it felt right; he said that was the start of the useful power and i wasnt using the bike properly. ;)
Ever since then i've fully 'taken advantage' of the bikes power in the upper stratospheric rev range. ;)

I wish I had the room to wind mine up that far. My redline is only 11.5K but the power starts coming on at 5K and goes all the way to the limit.

I must say that is quite enjoyable to break most maximum posted speed limits in first gear.

I've had my bike up to 240 so far. I was at around 10 000 revs in 6th at the time (goes to 13000 I think... perhaps 14000 until red).

My old fzr250 - Max was 160, at 15500 revs. The bike had more, I didn't have more guts. It is much more confidence inspiring going at speed on a bigger bike.

You say that; and i fear for my own temptation with a 955i in my hands. I'll defiitely have to get a track day under my belt as soon as i've got it under control. ;)

The bike doesn't control your throttle hand - how you push it is your choice.

... as i said... "my own temptation"
I'm tempted to pin the throttle, although given a bit more grunt i may not want to try that.

Hey man i'm surprised you remember the exact revs (its been a while since your fzr days hasn't it?). I was skittling along at that speed on the weekend and i couldn't quote revs to nearest 1000.
Koma, your 'advice' is spot on, got to hold it in 5th as long as you dare to get up over the 160-170 range, before kicking up that last time. Takes a while to get the confidence to really scream it. Good fun, but.
