Well done mate, no as easy as one thinks. Having said that, after a few times you'll think nothing of it....carbs off=no problem!! Working outdoors in the cold.....not very nice. Admire you perseverance with the task at hand.....never say die attitude Do yourself a favour, pop into Supercheap and $6.50 grab the long Philips head for the carbs, you won't regret it. If working in the dark, pop into Bunnings and grab the "CLICK" torch which is rechargeable......laughing!! I would try and get the small screw for the choke renewed.....trust me the carbs will come off again. I use a short Philips head.
Good advice that is. The thought of working on a bike atm sends chills down my spine with how much my hands currently hurt. But yeah if I do plan on taking them off again (clean, or boot change, main jet change ect) I will be much better prepared for the task next time. To be honest I will probably change most of the screws, the current ones in there are soft as all hell. But thanks! Slowly but surely I will get there haha.
**Update** Okay so pretty much after much thought and the help of Matts mc22 dyno results with uni-filter I came to the conclusion that I didn't want to drop the jet size of 15, 12, 12, 15 to meet the uni-filter for 3 reasons: A: I wanted moah powa! B: because taking the carbs off is a pain in the ass C: didn't want to pay or wait for the smaller jets It was pretty much obvious that the uni-filter isn't as "hi flow" as what it makes out to be. So I hit up Simon got some info and went down to Clark Rubber and picked up the lowest density polywhateverator foam to mod my old paper filter. This is it finished. I also decided to cut some to fit my "sub" air filter because it never felt quite right having it be completely empty. Now I stopped off at bunnings to get the SMALLEST washers they had to take another stab at the needle shim job... Now they FIT, just! However they are clearly double the thickness of the stock ones, so I ended up removing the stock one and just having the one thick one on there. And that was that, quick and easy enough. Mmmm slightly dirty carbs *drools* sacralicious. (I feel it gives my bike a bit of character) all done. Now I put it all back together and when i started it up, the idle was sitting at 1.5k revs instead of 2k revs and i was like "hmm well at least something has changed" so I adjusted the idle mixture back to 2k revs. Decided I had to test it out! AND HOLY FLYING PONIES BATMAN! My bike thinks its brolly from dragon ball z because its power is maximum. In all seriousness its official that uni filter sucks and I need to go to a dyno. But don't get too jealous, because as with all of my work... something had to go wrong. As I was putting the screw back in for the fuel tank it broke off inside it (i removed my fuel tank about 20+ times trying to fix my electrical problem, not surprised the screw snapped). So yeah, that sucks! dont even know where to start with that. But honestly the bike has completely smooth and consistent all the way up to 18k revs and now has more power than it ever has before. I now need to go find a dyno. The end.
Buy some screw extractors. ALDI had them on sale and we bought a set. They thread into the screw counterclockwise and undo it.
Oh also as per Phills previous advice, JUST in case the carbs did need to come off again I got myself the MOTHER of all long rang screw drivers. Buy fortunately I didnt need to remove the carbs. The next time I do though it will only be to clean them and replace all the seals and boots with litetek. But everything seems to be running good atm so yeah, don't fix whats not broken.
You will find it so easy with that long screw driver, I have used them so much Pleased to hear you are getting things sorted.
I have been entertained by this thread. Watching with interest. If I hadnt of committed to going back to competitve shooting, I would have got a tracker.
Okay so after ridding for a bit with the new configuration I have noticed my bike is starting to "spit" past 15k revs, it can go past it but it kind of spits past it. Everything else before hand is amazing but then suddenly pas 15k its like spitting and not getting the same power as prior to hitting 15k. Its not crazy bad or anything but I dont think I have the main jets quite perfect. Its either still lean or rich. Could it do the spitting thing lean and rich? or would the result be differ from one to the other at high revs?
Ok Ill try it. But outside the box, lets say it doesn't do anything by chance. Is it possible my ignition is failing me?
Don't be ridiculous, we all know that iridium plugs add 3% horse power... Hey everyone, get a load of this guy! Hahaha right?
Let's focus on 1 issue at a time, try what Murdo suggested and we may have the answer.......think about it.
Yeah so choke on made it better, it still blipped really slightly on 15k but then shot all the way to 20k so I have leaned it out too much with the new filter it would seem. Only question is now do I up the size of the main jets or put in some higher density filter foam.
