From what I was told (I haven't picked the bike up yet to strip it back down) it will need to be resleved, but I'm pretty sure I can pick up a new set of sleeves and whatever gaskets i need online for a couple hundred.

I already have 99% of the knowledge required after I helped a friend hone his cylinders, put in new rings and valve stem seals on his 94 ZX6R, plus, he still has all the tools.

The timing of all of this just sucks because I can go for my Unrestricted license in a month or so and I have the thundercat to fix up and I don't see it as "worth it" to fix the ZXR just to ride it for 3 months and then have to do this whole process again to the thundercat later on down the track.

I still have a big fat wad of cash saved up, and I might as well put it towards the YZF... it seems to have less problems than the ZXR.

But I'm not going to give up on the ZXR, I'll get back to her in due time.

-EDIT- the 5k included new pistons (i'm pretty sure the pistons are fine though), rings, valves, valve stem seals/spings/clips, gaskets, plus all the work.

I had a strange gut feeling because after telling me all this, they tried to buy her back off me for $100.

the people who offerred you 100 dollars were trying to scare you into selling so they could either wreck or repair to make a profit.

oh yeah... sorry my mind was somewhere else.

Yeah I gathered that after the words "about $5 grand in parts an labour" left the mechanics mouth.

I managed to get a list of part numbers for all the bits and pieces i'm going to need.

basically the 2 gaskets, and a set of pistons rings as well as the cylinders. am I missing anything?

    i need 11004-1224 and 11009-1780

but for $17 i might as well go for it.

if I can get away with not replacing the bottom gasket, i can pretty much save $200. But I don't know how important that gasket really is and if I can get away with some gasket glue.

I have a spare one for my FZR as I bought a set of barrels and pistons. It appears to be just a steel flexible gasket. I imagine that it can be re-used. @Grasshopper says that gasket isn't likely to blow as it's not where the compression happens. Still, it needs to seal properly. If the ZXR engine is anything like the FZR, the barrels/block are held in by the torque on the head. When you undo the head you can take it off along with the barrels. Inspect the gasket and see what condition it's in. Check both surfaces too (crank/bottom end and the barrels).

Try the uk, they only had a few imported, but they carry spares at a "reasonable" pride also the zxr250 was availed in USA, they have spares too. Locally the zxr250c motor was used in the balius model, so spares are available through Kawasaki Australia. Can't remember which one has the larger piston zxr250 A or C, maybe you can big bore your motor? The difference is 1mm in piston size
